Ferrous powder is a dark grey iron powder suitable for decorative use on paintings and mixed media. Ferrous Powder is exceptional in that it can be used to make magnetic coatings. By adding the ferrous powder to the paint (30% to 50% ferrous powder by weight) the resultant coating will hold most average magnets. The resultant surface should be sealed with a clear coat of solvent based varnish to avoid oxidation occurring especially outdoors.
For a special effects ferrous powder can be rusted. Use with Impasto Medium, Gel Medium, Matt Varnish, Gloss Varnish and Gloss Medium or Matt Gel Medium. And leave to react with moisture in the air (we do not advise the use of oxidising agents to speed up the process of rusting as they may effect the stability of the rest of the film. therefore Caution should be taken when mixing as rusting may occur. If you do not want the powder to rust it must be mixed with with Varnish Gloss Finish (Turps-based), Varnish Matt Finish (turps based) or Varnish Satin Finish (turps based).and then a clear coat of one of these varnishes over the top to completely close off the ferrous powder from contact with the air.
